Stiff Arm Trophy

OK, let's get started!

You know what my favorite part of Thanksgiving is? Besides the turkey, stuffing, and pumpkin pie, that is.

It's the time of year when the Heisman race really gets urgent. Ballots arrived in voters' hands last weekend, and they're due back shortly after championship Saturday on December 7.

So, we've got just two weekends of football left before voters will make their final calls. And it looks like this year's race is more topsy-turvy than just about any year in recent memory. Just a few short weekends ago, it looked like we were talking about Oregon's Marcus Mariota, Baylor's Bryce Petty, and Texas A&M's Johnny Manziel for the repeat.

But if ESPN's latest Heisman poll is to be believed (and I'm not sure that I do), then none of those three would even make the trip to New York. ESPN has the top four as FSU QB Jameis Winston, BC RB Andre Williams, Alabama QB AJ McCarron, and NIU QB Jordan Lynch.

Just as soon as we start seeing people make their votes final, we'll start our projection countdown.

Of course, this year, the Heisman Trust is doubling down on secrecy, rather than recognizing that college football badly needs transparency. They're hammering on voters, demanding omerta instead of openness. Never mind that sites like Stiff Arm Trophy are a critical part of the hype machine, building up the suspense and excitement of the race -- leading to monster TV ratings when the vote is close.

More about the inside politics of the Heisman later. For now, keep your eyes and ears open. If anyone says, "I'm done considering. Here's my final, official ballot." let me know. I doubt we'll see any of that until the weekend of December 7.

Stay tuned. It's going to be a wild ride.
