Who is the biggest Trophy winner ever?
Note: This is a media advisory that was delivered to sports reporters yesterday. It's already been picked up by MSNBC here
According to a survey of over 175 H------ voters by StiffArmTrophy.com, USC tailback Reggie Bush will be the landslide winner of the 2005 H------ Trophy.
Said political consultant Kari Chisholm, who organizes the trophy fansite, "it's possible that Reggie Bush may receive the most votes of all time. Our analysis suggests that Bush may earn 82% to 86% of the points possible. That's within striking distance of the previous top two - Ricky Williams and Charlie Ward."
While others have examined the vote margin or the total points earned - those methods are flawed. After all, the number of official voters has fluctuated from 500-700 in the 1940s, to over 1200-1300 in the 1950s, to the present 920-or-so since 1988.
The best way to analyze "biggest winner" is to examine the points scored, as a percentage of points possible (number of voters times three). By that method, the top 10 biggest winners of the H------ Trophy:
YEAR POINTS WINNER
1998 85.2% Ricky Williams
1993 83.8% Charlie Ward
1968 80.6% O.J. Simpson
1991 75.5% Desmond Howard
1976 75.0% Tony Dorsett
1999 73.8% Ron Dayne
1984 71.1% Doug Flutie
1986 70.3% Vinny Testaverde
1997 65.7% Charles Woodson
1967 63.5% Gary Beban
1994 63.2% Rashaan Salaam
1982 61.1% Herschel Walker
1951 60.0% Richard Kazmaier
1974 59.5% Archie Griffin
2000 58.9% Chris Weinke
1970 58.8% Jim Plunkett
1975 57.6% Archie Griffin
1983 57.2% Mike Rozier
1981 57.0% Marcus Allen
1955 55.9% Howard Cassady
Where will Reggie Bush rank?
In 2005, there are 923 voters - with 2769 points maximum available. If Bush earns over 2361 points, he will be the biggest H------ winner of all time. Over 2321, and he will rank #2. Over 2233, and he will rank #3, just ahead of USC tailback OJ Simpson. (Do your own math: Just divide his total points by 2769 to determine the percentage.)
